Greg Raymer

Greg Raymer is a professional poker player. He was born in 25th June, 1964 in Minot in North Dakota. He is popular for winning the World Series Poker Tournament in 2004. He is easily recognized by his fans as he wears his trademark holographic sunglasses when he plays poker.   

In his early days, Greg moved a lot with his family from one place to another. He finally shifted to St. Louis in Missouri. Raymer graduated from the Parkway South High School in St. Louis. He then did his majors in chemistry from the University of Missouri-Rolla. He then did his graduation in law from the University of Minnesota Law School n 1992. he then practiced as an attorney for more than 10 years. However his focus shifted from law to poker and he began to play poker full time.

Greg moved to Stonington in Connecticut in 1999. He started playing poker at the Foxwoods casino while he was still a patent lawyer for the pharmaceutical major, Pfizer. Greg won about $1500 in his first appearance in the World Series of Poker in 2001. After the 2004 series, Greg won over David Williams to bag $5,000,000 which was the first prize in the no limit Texas hold’em WSOP event. He gained an entry into the event as he had won the prior $160 satellite event on Poker Stars. At present, Greg is a representative with 2005 World Poker series champion, Joe Hachem.             
Greg was placed 25th in the 2005 WSOP event. He earned about $304,680 in that event. His achievements have been rated great by his peers especially because the competition and the influx of players in the event had increased manifold. Greg took part in the 2005 British Poker Open that was televised live in many countries across the world. He was the firm favorite in that tournament and he secured 3rd place to collect around £20,000. In the 2006 PokerStars tournament, Greg secured the second place winning around $1,000,000. In September 2007, Greg went on the win $168,362 in the PokerStars event. Greg’s total earnings as of 2008 stand at $6,000,000.     
Greg is called Fossil by many of his peers as he has developed a hobby of collecting fossils. He in fact makes use of small fossil as a card protector. He would also make some extra income earlier by selling fossils to his fellow players. Greg also plays in some major poker tournaments apart from the World Series. However he has lessened his poker playing as he wants to spend quality time with his wife and daughter. In November 2005, Greg shifted with his wife and daughter to North Carolina. Unlike other poker players, Greg was allergic to alcohol. Greg is also interested in politics as in December 2006, he said in an interview that he would not mind running for the 2008 Presidential elections. He wanted to become a candidate in the Libertarian Party. Greg Raymer will go down in history as one of the best players that the world of poker has ever produced.
